Creating Hope Through Action: Marking World Suicide Prevention Day

WS Blog (1)

Every year on 10th September, people across the globe come together for World Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, breaking stigma, and supporting those affected by suicide.

This year’s theme, “Creating Hope Through Action”, is a powerful reminder that small steps can make a big difference.

Suicide remains a deeply challenging topic, yet it’s one we can’t shy away from. The World Health Organization estimates that over 700,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide, and behind every number is a life, a story, and loved ones left behind.

🗣️ Why Talking Matters

Stigma often stops people from seeking help, but by starting open, non-judgmental conversations about mental health, we can create safe spaces where people feel heard and supported. Asking, “How are you, really?” and listening without rushing to fix things can be more powerful than we realise.

🪧 Signs Someone May Be Struggling
While not always obvious, some warning signs to look out for include:

🔹Withdrawal from friends, family, or usual activities

🔹Talking about feeling hopeless or like a burden

🔹Significant mood changes

🔹Neglecting personal appearance or responsibilities

🔹Expressing thoughts about death or dying

If you notice these signs, trust your instincts. Reaching out could be life-changing.

💻The Role of Workplaces

For many, the workplace is where they spend a large part of their day, making it a key environment for spotting changes in behaviour and offering support. Employers and colleagues can:

▫️Encourage open conversations about well-being

▫️Provide access to Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) or helplines

▫️Train managers in mental health first aid

▫️Promote flexible working to reduce stress

By fostering a culture of care, workplaces can be a protective factor rather than a source of stress.
